This document discusses the pressing need for rehabilitation and assistive technology (AT) services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries and conflict-affected areas. The five-year global initiative, Learning, Acting, and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS), funded by USAID, focuses on addressing this need in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s health system, burdened with challenges, struggles to meet the needs of its 200 million population. The split between public and private sectors, along with shortages in skilled workforce and a fragmented health system, results in gaps in rehabilitation and AT services. The government is committed to equitable access, but barriers like insufficient workforce, lack of equipment, and limited resources hinder service delivery.

ReLAB-HS collaborates with local actors to implement innovative service delivery models, leveraging technology and local structures to expand access to quality rehabilitation and AT services. The initiative engages with stakeholders at all levels to co-design practical solutions, transform health systems, and promote gender equality and social inclusion.

In Pakistan, ReLAB-HS concentrates efforts in the Swat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Thatta district of Sindh. Activities include collaborating on assessments, generating evidence on rehabilitation policy, delivering training programs, establishing Networks of Care, and co-designing improved service delivery models. The initiative has resulted in improved access for over 4,350 individuals, completion of 3,700+ rehabilitation and AT trainings, and strengthening of 16 quality and integration processes.
